How to plant asparagus crowns

We're also here at the time for bare root asparagus.

This is what you'll get, so you've got your roots and your all-important growth nodes here where your spears and ferny parts of the plant will come out.

Here's last year's planted asparagus we're just going to be adding a little bit more because you can't have too much asparagus. This is the fern part you can see parts of it yellowing, very good idea to make sure you let that completely die down to the ground so you're not rubbing anything from the all-important engine room the below the ground part of the plant.

Asparagus like everything, likes a good rich soil but it also likes really really good drainage so we want well worked soil to hold enough moisture. then we'll dig our little trench, then we make a mound in the middle of that. The idea of that is we sit this asparagus up and we have the roots spread over the mound. 

Just like we were with the rhubarb we do want these growth tips proud of the soil above soil level we don't want to bury those. so we come down cover it up, firm it down and water it in well but make sure you don't over water it until it's in full bigger and actively growing come spring.

This asparagus is probably going to take two three years to produce but it is a true perennial vegetable it'll produce for 20 well over 20 years.
