Although this is detrimental to the eating quality of the leek, the flower heads rival the beauty of many of the ornamental Alliums such as A. giganteum. The tastiest leeks grow in nutrient-rich soil. Transplant seedlings into holes to ensure a long shank or hill up soil around them as they grow.
