Top tips on how to grow microgreens

Tip 1: Location
One of the benefits of growing microgreens is that they grow wonderfully in pots or recycled containers. Be sure to place the pots in a location that gets at least 5 hours of sunlight a day so that your greens don't become lanky.
Microgreens can also be grown in the vegie garden and it would be best to plant them at the edge of the bed for easy harvest. They are small, so make sure they don't get swamped by neighbouring plants.
Tip 2: Soil
Microgreens grown in pots need the best quality potting mix you can find. This will give them a nutritious and well draining growth medium. As with other vegies, they'll need a well composted soil in the vegie garden.
Tip 3: Pots
We've grown microgreens in punnets, seedling trays and small terracotta pots. Keep in mind that they are ready to harvest in about 4 weeks so they will not need a deep pot as they won't be forming a big root system. Be creative! Recycle old tea cups for colourful microgreen pots.
Tip 4: Sowing
Sow microgreen seed thickly over the surface of the potting mix or soil. They are best grown massed (like the image above) to produce a good quantity to harvest.
Tip 5: Harvesting
Microgreens should be ready to harvest about 4 weeks after sowing. They seeds will have formed about 4 leaves, the flavours will be beautifully delicate and they will be full of nutrients. It is easy to harvest the leaves with a sharp pair of kitchen scissors.
It is best to keep sowing microgreens every few weeks or so for a continual harvest.
