Spring Onion 'Evergreen Trident'
Grown for their mild bulbs and long hollow green leaves, spring onions are a staple of the vegie garden and kitchen. A versatile easy to grow vegie that can be used in a range of dishes from salads to stir fries. They add a touch of heat without making your eyes water like their other onion cousins.
All onions require rich, well drained soil. Onion seed can be sown directly into the garden, however many gardeners find it more effective to sow into punnets and transplant. Plant in full sun and enrich the soil with compost, well-rotted manure and dolomite prior to planting. Make a shallow trench to 5cm and lie seedlings across the trench so that the roots are at the base. Backfill and water well. Plants will stand up within a week. Mulch well and keep weed free. Harvest when required. If you don't want to disturb the soil, the green tops can be cut and the bulb will produce additional leaves for a second harvest.
