Salvia Africana-Lutea
Standard texts say that this salvia will flower from spring to the first frosts but ours at Heronswood seems to keep flowering all year. Striking rust-brown flowers emerge from soft yellow buds, which provide a contrast to the small aromatic grey-green leaves. This dense evergreen shrub clips well, suitable for a screen, hedge or feature in a full sun position. Like other African salvias, this one is dry and frost tolerant and deserves a place in any dry garden. Attractive to bees and other pollinators.
Plant in full sun in well drained soil. Withstands long periods without water and tolerant of coastal conditions and light frost. Needs minimal pruning, with a light tidy up for shape after main flowering flush recommended to maintain density.
