Pumpkin 'Shane's Butternut'
A true community treasure, this butternut pumpkin comes from the hands of gardener Shane, who shared his seed with Amanda Emry at the Dubbo Community Garden. Celebrating the spirit of seed sharing that underpins Diggers, ‘Shane’s Butternut’ proved itself in our 2024 taste trials, outranking every other pumpkin for flavour. Big enough to sling over your shoulder, its generous sweet orange flesh is perfect for roasting, soups and sharing with family and friends.
Sow direct in spring to early summer, once the soil has warmed to at least 18°C. Plant in a sunny, open position with rich, well-drained soil and plenty of space for vines to sprawl. Water deeply and consistently, and harvest when the skin hardens and the stalk dries off.
