Pumpkin 'Musquee De Provence'

Cucurbita moschata

Popular in Southern France for its sweet flesh, this large, flattened, heavily fluted pumpkin has skin that ages to a vintage orange-brown on deeply-lobed sections. Often described as having the appearance of a large wheel of cheese, this pumpkin is not only grown for flavour, but also its stunning ornamental value, which captures the nuance of heirlooms. Harvest in 17 weeks; yields 23kg per plant.

Pumpkin 'Musquee De Provence'

An heirloom French pumpkin from the 1800s, and often described as a fairytale pumpkin because they are so perfect, like an illustration in a children's book. The fine texture and excellent flavour also makes this a favourite with Chefs and gourmets.

How to grow

Pumpkins are the easiest of the curcubits to grow, they are big feeders, so dig in plenty of well rotted manure where they are to grow. They germinate easily in warm soil, gardeners in cooler areas can start their seedlings in pots in a warm spot and plant out after risk of frost has passed. Pumpkins need plenty of water as they grow, mulch well to conserve moisture and eliminate weeds. Harvest pumpkins when the stalk attaching it to the vine turns woody and corky. Cut (not tear) the stalk from the plant. Never lift the pumpkin by this 'handle' as if it breaks off the pumpkin will go mouldy within days.
