Native Pigface

Carpobrotus rossii

A very low maintenance native plant also known as Karkalla or beach bananas, used as a food source and medicinally by First Nations peoples, Pig Face, as it is popularly known, is also a versatile and hardy ground cover for poor soils and dry coastal climates, often used as a ground stabiliser. The ripe fruit tastes like a small salty apple, while the leaves can be used as a salt substitute in both cooked and raw foods. The leaves can also be used to treat skin burns, or the juice can be extracted to form a mouthwash or throat gargle. And don't forget the vibrant pink flowers which pollinators love.

It has creeping prostrate stems which may extend up to 2 meters and may take root along the way.
