How to grow
Sow directly into well-prepared, free-draining soil in a sunny position during autumn or spring, avoiding periods of extreme heat or frost. Scatter seeds thinly, lightly rake into the soil and gently firm down. Keep moist until germination, generally within 7–21 days. Thin seedlings to approximately 20–30cm apart to allow for healthy growth and good airflow. Water regularly during establishment, then as required, avoiding waterlogged conditions. Remove spent flowers to encourage continued blooming and harvest fresh flowers regularly. Pick blooms in the morning once fully open, and use only flowers grown without unsuitable chemical sprays. For the best display, sow successive batches every few weeks during the growing season.
n warmer Australian climates, autumn sowing is generally preferable, while spring sowing is ideal in cooler regions. Lemon bee balm can flower later than calendula and cornflower, extending the seasonal display.
