How to grow
This collection of four Australian heirloom vegetables is ideal for sowing during the warmer months. Choose a sunny position with fertile, well-drained soil enriched with compost. Keep soil consistently moist during germination and water regularly throughout the growing season, particularly during flowering and fruit development. Bean ‘Australian Butter’ – Sow directly into warm soil in spring and summer, 2–3 cm deep and 10–15 cm apart. Grow in full sun, water regularly and harvest young pods frequently to encourage continued production. Pumpkin ‘Queensland Blue’ – Sow directly into warm soil after the last frost, 2–3 cm deep. Allow 1.5–2 m between plants for sprawling vines. Provide plenty of compost, consistent moisture and full sun. Harvest when the skin is hard and the stalk begins to dry. Cucumber ‘Crystal Apple’ – Sow 1–2 cm deep in warm soil after the last frost. Space plants 40–60 cm apart and provide a trellis to save space and improve airflow. Water consistently and harvest the rounded, pale fruits while young and tender for the best flavour. Tomato ‘Pink Queen’ – Sow seeds 5 mm deep in seed-raising mix, 6–8 weeks before the last expected frost. Transplant into a sunny, well-prepared garden bed once frost has passed and the soil has warmed. Space plants 50–60 cm apart, provide sturdy support and water deeply and consistently. Growing tip: All four varieties thrive in warm conditions. For best results, avoid planting into cold soil and mulch around established plants to conserve moisture and suppress weeds.
