Why we graft our avocados and don't grow from seed
Find out why.
Diggers Member:
Attached are photos of avocados which have grown from seed in compost. I would appreciate advice on variety and prospects of success.

Diggers Hort Advisor:
Seed grown avocados are variable and do not grow true to type. This means if the fruit the seed was from is a Hass, the resulting tree may not be a Hass so you will not know what type it is and if it is an A or B type. This is the reason we graft them.
Self sown plants do tend to grow into lovely green plants so you may want to keep it for ornamental value but you will not be able to tell if it is an A or B type and whether it needs a pollinator.
They also take much longer to fruit, if ever.
