Blame it on the rain!

Many parts of Australia have experienced periods of heavy rain and wild weather over the last few months. With rains set to continue, it’s a good time to take stock of the damage and prepare for more soggy days ahead!

What happens to waterlogged soil?

Gardens love rain but if soils can’t drain properly, they become waterlogged and anaerobic. They will have a characteristic ‘wet dog smell’. Plants are unable to access oxygen and nutrients from the soil which leaves them more prone to disease.

Flooding may lead to a decline in soil biodiversity if anaerobic conditions prevail and flood-related waterlogging may potentially lead to local salinization.

Waterlogged soils can become acidic which can be treated with an application of lime and an addition of animal manures for nutrient-deficient soils.

How to fix waterlogged soil

The first step to remedying waterlogged soil is to remove the excess water. Try adding sand and soil to help absorb the moisture and add organic matter like compost to help with aeration and drainage.

Increasing organic matter content will result in better drainage and less nutrient loss in wetter conditions. Healthy soil makes healthier roots and plants in general, meaning those plants will be less vulnerable to winds and storm damage.

What about damaged plants?

For any damaged plants, prune out the affected parts, preventing wound access for pathogens and disease.

Early detection and removal of diseased plant parts will help to reduce spread. With broader fungal or disease issues, apply Eco-fungicide and remove heavily infested plants (bag & bin).

Tips moving forward

Moving forward, select ‘the right plant for the right place’, those that are naturally resilient to flooding for boggier sites and drought tolerant plants for drier areas of the garden.

A biodiverse garden will help with attracting beneficial insects for organic pest control and make your garden more resilient.

Wood-chip mulch on pathways will help absorb water better than rocks or pavers.

Erecting temporary shade-cloth tents can help protect more vulnerable plants and new seedlings as well as moving pots under-cover when heavy rains are predicted.
