Start pruning roses
Winter rose pruning time. Remove all leaves from bushes and rake up around beds.

Plant out your spring edible garden
Asparagus, seed potatoes, bare rooted strawberries, bare rooted fruit trees and rhubarb crowns. Be sure to plant in raised beds to improve drainage.

Sprays are applied at the end of July and again around the second week in August- usually when the blossom buds start to swell and turn pink. Once leaf-tips appear a few days later, it is already too late. Fertilise with high nitrogen fertiliser like aged chicken manure and water well.

Warm Region

Pruning:
Prune deciduous fruit trees if you need increased growth and vigour (not apricots as these are best pruned in late autumn). Prune herbaceous perennial plants.

Early this month as the chance of gales increase.

Pests:
Control leaf miner and over-wintering bronze orange stink bug on citrus by spraying with eco-oil.

Fertilise:
Fertilise flowers and winter vegetables fortnightly using a seaweed solution or a complete liquid flower & fruit fertiliser like Ocean Brew.

Plant:
Bare-root deciduous trees, shrubs and vines before mid-month.

Tropical Region

Plant edibles:
Asparagus crowns, last crop of lettuce, endive, Chinese cabbage and other fast growing greens.

Mulch:
Early this month and monitor soil moisture levels

Pests:
Keep an eye out for the little green caterpillars on brassica crops (net or spray with Dipel or pick off).

Harvest:
Root vegetables regularly. Tomatoes are abundant: make chutney and jam. Harvest bananas, pawpaw and pumpkin.
