The Diggers Club | Natasha Morgan

Natasha on Diggers

Heirloom and open-pollinated varieties, grown for flavour and for saving, are the backbone of how I plant at my 515 square metre Daylesford property Little Cottage on a Hill, and they were there at Oak & Monkey Puzzle’s 5 acres before it. So working with Diggers around this book feels less like a new idea than a natural next step.

We share a belief that a productive garden gives more than it takes: beauty, food, habitat, solace and seed and knowledge handed on. Over the coming months you'll find me at Heronswood, Cloudehill, The Garden of St Erth and Adelaide Botanic Gardens talking about the book.

Across the four events Natasha and her guests will explore how gardeners grow, creating gardens that nourish us, what gardens mean to us, and how we grow and thrive in a changing climate. There is more in the works that brings the seeds and the pages of The Productive Garden Companion closer together.

Diggers on Natasha

Like so many good connections, it all started with a long, delicious lunch and flowing conversation. We left feeling a bit smitten with Natasha. She loves heirlooms, we love heirlooms. She loves beautiful productive gardens, we do too. We’re both committed to growing gardeners. She works with purpose and values, and ours are aligned. She is our friend and we look forward to working together on many more projects.

Natasha Morgan

Natasha Morgan is an award-winning landscape architect, lifelong gardener, educator, and writer, and the author of The Productive Garden Companion (Murdoch Books, 2026). She is known for making productive gardens feel achievable and beautiful, and for gardens that support meaningful lives.

Trained in architecture and landscape architecture, she spent six years on the Australian Garden at Royal Botanic Gardens Cranbourne and lectured in landscape architecture for more than a decade. In 2014 she moved to country Victoria and created Oak & Monkey Puzzle, an internationally recognised five-acre experiment in beauty, productivity and community. Her work continues at Little Cottage on a Hill in Daylesford, where 515 square metres hold a whole philosophy: any space, at any scale, can become a generous, life-giving garden.

She writes the cold temperate column for ABC Organic Gardener, is the garden columnist for Billy, and is Global Head of Community at Gardenstead, and through writing, teaching and speaking helps people grow one thing, then another, then a life that feels more grounded, connected and alive.

The Productive Garden Companion
by Natasha Morgan

"These pages are my way of walking beside you, offering what I've learned and loved in the hope that they keep you in good company as you grow your own way."

Landscape architect, educator and lifelong gardener Natasha Morgan draws on decades of experience to offer a fresh vision of the productive garden as something generous and deeply sustaining, whether you are gardening on a balcony, in a suburban backyard, or across a larger piece of land.

This richly layered book weaves together Natasha's personal experience, practical guidance and design thinking with a range of case studies from Australia and around the world. With QR-linked content, downloadable tools and chapters on garden design, soil, planting, harvesting, preserving and sustainable practices, it offers both inspiration and knowledge in equal measure.

The Productive Garden Companion is an enduring guide to return to through the seasons, demonstrating how a garden can shape the way we live: feeding us, grounding us and connecting us to place.

Less is more

Living in the greener part of Central Victoria, with good rainfall and rich volcanic soil, I often see beautiful gardens as I drive around. One particular garden caught my eye. Masterfully planted perennial combinations extended out onto the verge, then raised beds brimming with edibles sprang up; every last bit of space was filled with an abundance of crops.

The morning lap

The tea comes with me. Most mornings, before anything else, I’m out the door with a cup in hand for a lap of the garden, however the day finds me. If you walk your dog early through Daylesford, you’ll probably catch me in my verge garden in my pyjamas. (I might even awkwardly wave!) The lap takes five minutes, sometimes two. Right now, in late winter, it’s full of little clues.

The prettiest lettuce I grow. Speckled like a trout, slow to bolt, and it keeps the salad bowl going for weeks if you pick the outer leaves.

Bean 'Rattlesnake' Climbing

A climbing bean that just keeps going. Purple-streaked pods, tender even when you've left them a day too long, and it shares a trellis happily.

A tomato for a pot by the back door. Knee high, fruiting early, and proof you don't need a garden bed to grow one thing.

A small chestnut-flavoured pumpkin that climbs instead of taking over the bed. I grow it up a frame with the beans running alongside.

"A dear friend of mine gifted me a membership some years ago now and each year I renew it! I wanted to thank you so very much for the wonderful magazines and seed catalogues I have received over the seasons. Not only have they brought me great joy, but they have also taught me so much!"

"I like the friendly nature of the club, lots to choose from and I'm always discovering new things. I always love getting the seasonal magazine too!"

"Everything is so engaging - makes me want to get out and sow seeds and watch them grow! Lots of easy-to-understand information in the magazines that is presented beautifully. And I think the work you do is so important"
