'Tomato - know, grow, sow, feast' Collection by Penny Woodward

My top 10 tomatoes to grow for a rainbow of different colours providing important phytonutrients. These are a mixture of my favourite salad, saucing and slicing tomatoes, some are small cherries, others are large beefsteaks and the rest are all the sizes in between. But most of all they cover a rainbow of colours.

All tomatoes contain important phytonutrients but they vary depending on the colour of the flesh and skin. Classic red tomatoes contain the antioxidant lycopene as well as carotene. Yellow tomatoes have less lycopene, but have delta carotene and  lutein. Orange tomatoes are high in beta carotene and also contain prolycopene. While purple and brown tomatoes like Black Krim have lycopene combined with pheophytin, beta carotene and chlorophyll. True blue/black tomatoes like Red and Black contain lycopene and carotene but also anthocyanins in the skin. By growing and eating many different tomato colours you will add a range of essential phytonutrients to your diet, as well as the fun of growing and cooking a rainbow of colours.
