Imagine the delicious aroma of freshly-roasted coffee beans, made even more magical because you grew them yourself! Whilst the first beans were discovered on the Ethiopian Plateau, once their simulant qualities were identified, the beans move to the Arabian Peninsula and then eventually to Indonesia, Sumatra, and now, Australia. Coffee prefers moist well-drained, slightly-acidic soils and does well in subtropical areas (climates with a pronounced Wet and Dry season). In cooler climates, protect from frost and position near a warm north-facing wall or try growing indoors.

How to grow

Coffee plants prefer bright but indirect light. Soil should be slightly acidic, moist but not wet with good drainage. They will not do well in outdoor temperatures consistently below 18 deg c. but can be happily grown indoors or in a green house. Apply an all purpose fertiliser in spring and summer. Tip prune to encourage bushy growth. They may take up to 5 years to flower in ideal conditions.
