Thrives in a cool, sheltered position protected from hot, drying winds. It prefers dappled shade to morning sun, closely mimicking its native forest habitat. Plant in rich, moist, well-drained soil with an acidic to neutral pH (5.5–6.5) and enrich with organic compost before planting. Consistent moisture is essential; avoid both drought and waterlogging. A thick layer of organic mulch, such as pine bark or leaf litter, will help conserve soil moisture and maintain acidity. Feed in spring with a slow-release fertiliser formulated for acid-loving plants, and supplement with occasional liquid seaweed to encourage strong root growth. Pruning needs are minimal — lightly shape after flowering and remove any dead or damaged branches in late winter. Clethra arborea tolerates light frosts once established but may require protection in colder climates. In areas with severe winters, it can be grown in large containers and moved to shelter as needed.
