Hill's Fig

Ficus microcarpa var. hillii

Most gardeners grow this tree as a drought-tolerant lush green hedge, but next time you drive from Sydney airport into the city, look out for Hill’s Fig. It is a truly beautiful lush green shade tree with an elegant form. In low rainfall areas it has the perfect shape to provide dense shade and it is not messy like a Moreton Bay Fig. Often clipped as a fast-growing lush green hedge to 3 metres. Thrives in sandy soils too.

Hill's Fig

The ultimate lush tree, Hill's Fig can also be grown as a large hedge or pruned for topiary. In low rainfall areas, it has the perfect shape to provide dense shade. In areas of summer rainfall, like Sydney, it will have buttressed roots and grow almost as large as a Moreton Bay Fig. In small gardens, maintain by keeping the trunk clear and clipping the foliage regularly to maintain dense growth. Fast growth rate.
How to grow

This lush green-foliaged evergreen rainforest native is an ideal alternative to the Moreton Bay Fig, with proven adaption along the south east coast, and doesn’t drop messy leaves. In smaller gardens it can be clipped into a 5m x 2.5m hedge or sculptured form. Fast growth rate.
