Tomato 'Greek Treasure'
A true heirloom treasure with a remarkable story. This Greek tomato arrived in Australia by boat over 40 years ago, carried by a neighbour who brought seeds from his homeland. Gifted with a touch of secrecy - he believed sharing would bring bad luck. This variety has since been lovingly preserved and passed down through generations. Producing enormous, meaty beefsteaks with a rich, smooth flavour, these tomatoes are low in acidity, making them perfect for fresh eating or slow-cooked for authentic pasta sauces. A rare taste of the Mediterranean, steeped in tradition and bursting with flavour.
Tomatoes are one of the most rewarding crops you can grow, and with a little care they’ll keep you in delicious fruit all summer long. Choose a sunny spot with at least 6–8 hours of direct sun and enrich the soil with plenty of compost or well-rotted manure before planting. Start seeds indoors in late winter and transplant once the frosts have passed and the soil has warmed. Space plants 50–70cm apart and give them a sturdy stake or trellis for support. Water regularly at the base to keep the soil evenly moist, and mulch well to lock in moisture and keep roots cool. A fortnightly liquid feed, rich in potassium, will boost flowering and fruiting. Pinch outside shoots on tall, indeterminate varieties to direct energy into fruit, while bush types can be left to grow with minimal pruning. With these simple steps, you’ll be rewarded with baskets of homegrown tomatoes bursting with flavour—the true taste of summer.
