Columbine 'Eastern Red'

'Eastern Red' Columbine produces nodding, jewel-like flowers of soft red and buttery yellow that seem designed for the early spring garden. Its distinctive spurred blooms are a natural magnet for hummingbirds, which feed on the nectar hidden deep within each elegant flower.

Flowering in late spring, this hardy columbine thrives in part shade to dappled woodland conditions, where it self-seeds gently to create naturalised drifts over time. The finely cut, blue-green foliage forms a delicate base that remains attractive even when not in bloom.

Perfect for cottage gardens, native plantings, and shaded borders, Eastern Red Columbine brings movement, wildlife, and a sense of wild beauty to the garden just as the season begins to warm.

How to grow

Red Columbine thrives in fertile, well-drained soil enriched with organic matter. It performs best in dappled shade or morning sun, although it will tolerate full sun if soil moisture is maintained. Ideal for woodland gardens, cottage borders and beneath deciduous trees. Sowing Instructions Seeds benefit from a period of cold stratification to improve germination. Surface sow and lightly press into the soil, as light assists germination. Keep moist but not waterlogged during germination. Germination typically occurs in 3–4 weeks depending on temperature. Water regularly during establishment. Remove spent flower stems if self-seeding is not desired or leave them to encourage naturalised drifts. Plants may become dormant during hot, dry summers but will return the following season
