Broad Bean 'Jambalaya Jules'
Unlike most broad beans, Jambalaya Jules defies expectations by thriving from an August planting, producing exceptionally long pods bursting with classic broad bean flavour. Gifted by a Tasmanian farmer and nurtured in Mole Creek, this rare variety has proven to be rust-resistant, highly productive, and perfectly suited to cool climates. With a long harvest window and outstanding resilience, it’s a must-have for gardeners looking for a unique, high-yielding broad bean that breaks the rules - in the best way possible. Generously entrusted to The Diggers Club by Julie Gully, its legacy is ready to be shared.
Broad beans can be planted from autumn to spring, but must be done so that they finish flowering before the daytime temperature reaches 20 deg C. Preferring slightly alkaline soil, the addition of some lime is beneficial in more acid soils. Reasonable amount of air circulation to prevent fungal diseases is required. The best solution is to place stakes at the end of the rowsand tie string from stake to stake to support them. Pinch 10cm off the top of the plants as the flowers are fading to help 'set' the pods. Pick when young for maximum tenderness.
