Blood Lily 'Red'
Add something truly unique to your late summer garden. This strange and wonderful bulb sends up a striking blood-red, paintbrush-like flower on bare stems from February to April with no foliage in sight. After flowering, two large strap-like leaves emerge in autumn, lasting through winter and spring before the bulb rests dormant over summer. Wonderfully water-wise and perfect for pots or raised garden beds (it dislikes wet feet), it thrives in full sun to part shade, with extra protection in warmer climates.
Bulbs of the Amayllidaceae family (Belladonna, Nerines and Blood Lily) have evolved to adapt and thrive in climates with dry summers. The bulbs rest over the summer period and flower in time for the later rain in Autumn. Bulbs will often then form leaves after the bloomingto generate energy for next year's growth. Bulbs will benefit from a liquid feed once the foliage emerges.
