Welcome to January!

January Jobs

#1 Mulch

Lay mulch to reduce moisture loss from the soil surface

#2 Roses

Roses are in flower. Top up mulch and deadhead. Ensure adequate watering. Giving roses a light prune and liquid fertiliser will ensure a nice autumn flush of flowers.

#3 Irrigation system

Don't forget to check the irrigation system and water pot plants. If you're going on holiday, make sure you have someone visiting to hand water.

#4 Preserving your harvest

Time to start preserving your garden harvest. Your garden should be providing strawberries, raspberries & other cane berries, lots of salad and even some tomato varieties. Other fruits to harvest include gooseberries, figs, cherries, early nectarines and peaches

Diggers top pest tips

Earwigs

Earwigs can be a problem in a newly sprouting summer garden. Tell-tale signs are small holes in the middle of leaves or holes with ragged edges. Use traps and rolled up paper left overnight to attract them and remove in morning.

Slugs and snails

Use copper tape around pots and raised vegie gardens. Beer traps are good to attract, check regularly to clear them out.
