#1 Winter pruning
Prune your winter fruit trees now to shape and stimulate growth. This will increase your yield in summer.

Plant bare rooted fruit and decidious trees, strawberry runners, roses, rhubarb and asparagus crowns. For a fraction of the cost of containerised plants, it’s the cheapest way to fill your garden!
#3 Roses
Prune roses now in cold areas as to avoid frost damage. End of month fertilise all roses with a rose fertiliser except newly planted bare root roses.

In frost prone areas, protect more vulnerable plants with a cloche or cover with a sheet on icier evenings. Applying a fortnightly application of a seaweed solution will help nurse most plants through frosty nights.

Spray fruit trees for leaf curl before buds open: copper spray or lime sulphur and then again at bud swell (leaf curl affects peach, nectarines, almonds and other prunus spp).

Compost is breaking down slowly this time of year but will benefit greatly from aeration and the addition of carbon (shredded paper, cardboard, dry leaves).

Herb cuttings
Take cuttings of your herbs, such as rosemary and lemon balm.

Watering
Water smarter at this time of year. Check soil moisture before watering, in case of rain overnight and if dry apply a good soaking hose a couple of times a week.

Tool care
On cooler days you can embark on cleaning up the garden shed and cleaning, sharpening your tools. Remember they're your best helpers in the garden and need some love too!
