Rodger Elliot (AM)

Rodger is a horticulturalist, writer, lecturer, photographer, pseudo-botanist, and gardener who has had a passion for Australian plants for a long time.

Rodger has written for Australian and overseas garden journals and magazines since the 1970s and written over 25 books on Australian plants. He is co-author with David Jones of the highly renowned 9-volume The Encyclopaedia of Australian Plants Suitable for Cultivation that is illustrated by Trevor Blake.

Rodger with his wife Gwen owned and operated retail and wholesale nurseries specialising in Australian plants for about 30 years and were involved in selecting and breeding Australian plants for worldwide markets. He has lectured on Australian Plants in many parts of Australia as well as in USA, UK, Europe and Japan.

Rodger was a long-serving member (for 16 years) of the Royal Botanic Gardens Victoria Board. A past member of Royal Botanic Gardens Foundation Board, present member of the Maud Gibson Trust Advisory Committee (which solely supports the RBG Victoria), a Past President and current Committee Member of the Friends RBG Cranbourne. Is a regular on 3CR Gardening Show.

In June 2001 Rodger and Gwen were appointed Members of the Order of Australia (A.M.) for their contribution to the horticulture of Australian plants. In 1999 he received the Gold Veitch Memorial Medal from the Royal Horticultural Society, London, Rodger's other awards include Honorary Life Membership of Australian Plants Society (Vic) and the Arboretum Associates of University of California, Santa Cruz, Australian Plants Award (Commercial) 1995, Australian Natural History Medallion, Australian Institute of Horticulture's Award for Excellence, In 2014 Gwen and Rodger became members of Horticultural Media Association Hall of Fame.
