Tomato 'Black Cherry' (Organic)

Solanum lycopersicum L.
Organic

The overall winner of the Diggers Tomato Taste Test in 2024, this aptly named tomato bears dark juicy sweet fruit, which resemble cherries. This American heirloom offers a flavour profile like no other, which is why it is such a deserved winner of the taste test award. Whilst still firm, the fruit changes from green to mahogany-brown colour. If eaten at this stage, it is both sweet and tart. Once the fruit deepens to brown and the flesh becomes tender, the flavour deepens and develops more complexity with a lovely smokey-sweet flavour that's to die for. Yields 7.5kg per plant. Indeterminate.

Tomato 'Black Cherry' (Organic)

An open-pollinated variety from the US, where it was first cultivated by Vince Sapp, this tasty tomato has been available worldwide since 2003, and continue to grow in popularity each year. Browny-purple-red, round and exceptionally sweet fruit may give this tomato its name, but while the fruit may resemble ripe cherries, it tastes more like a deliciously sweet beefsteak tomato. A vigorous plant which benefits from vertical training. 'Black Cherry' has excellent disease resistance and is not prone to splitting. Strong vigorous plants with excellent disease resistance. Harvest in 9 weeks from transplant.
How to grow

Tomatoes are a warm season crop requiring temperatures of 15-29 degrees Celsius to grow and germinate successfully. Seed germinates best at 20-25 degrees Celsius, while the seedlings thrive from 15 degrees Celsius. Sow seed 6-8 weeks before you want to plant out your tomatoes. Sow in punnets or trays and maintain consistent moisture and temperature. Prick out and place in individual pots once true leaves appear and harden off at least one to two weeks before planting out. Plant tomato seedlings out when soil temperature reaches 15°C or more, and after risk of frost has passed. Plant in full sun and enrich the soil with compost and well-rotted manure. In pots, use a premium organic potting mix. Mulch and water regularly, especially during hot weather. Stake at planting and train to the stake as plants grow. Avoid overhead watering.
