Tomato 'Angora Super Sweet'

Solanum lycopersicum L.

With exceptionally sweet fruit, 'Angora Super Sweet' won the Diggers 2023 Tomato Taste Test with many describing the fruit as "Perfection". Traditionally both fruit and foliage is covered in fine hairs, however 1 in 10 plants bear a crop of furless fruits, and our seed has been saved from these plants, giving a higher probability of smooth skinned fruit. Quick to harvest, and a variety that needs to be tasted to be believed, these sweet jewels are bound to become a favourite of most Aussie gardeners.

Tomato 'Angora Super Sweet'

Also known as 'Velvet Red' due to the traditional fuzzy finish to the fruit, this heirloom cherry was preserved in the Diggers Seed Vault and is new to our range in 2023. Bred by Joe Bratka in New Jersey, USA in 1996, we were given seed by Seed Savers in the US and this variety has proven itself to be tasty, hardy and reliable, winning the 2023 taste test and cropping well in an otherwise difficult growing season. Diggers seed has been saved from a smooth skinned plant, but please be aware some fuzzy fruits may develop as is true to the variety. If this occurs, simply rub to remove the fine hairs which often act as a deterrent to pests and other predators.
How to grow

Tomatoes are a warm season crop requiring temperatures of 15-29 degrees Celsius to grow and germinate successfully. Seed germinates best at 20-25 degrees Celsius, while the seedlings thrive from 15 degrees Celsius. Sow seed 6-8 weeks before you want to plant out your tomatoes. Sow in punnets or trays and maintain consistent moisture and temperature. Prick out and place in individual pots once true leaves appear and harden off at least one to two weeks before planting out. Plant tomato seedlings out when soil temperature reaches 15°C or more, and after risk of frost has passed. Plant in full sun and enrich the soil with compost and well-rotted manure. In pots, use a premium organic potting mix. Mulch and water regularly, especially during hot weather. Stake at planting and train to the stake as plants grow. Avoid overhead watering.
