Hazelnut 'Butler'
A popular mid-season hazelnut that produces a heavy yield of large oblong nuts with good flavour and texture. ‘Butler’ is grown commercially and is also planted as a pollinator – it’s a two for one! Pollinates ‘Ennis’. Requires 1,000-1,200 chill hours (below 7°C) for cropping.
A popular nut tree for home gardeners because of their size and versatility. Flowering in winter, they add interest to the garden when many other trees are dormant. More than one tree is required for pollination and all Diggers Hazelnuts are selected to cross pollinate in your garden. Low chill varieties, they still need a minimum of around 1000 hours chill to successfully set nuts. Trees start to set a small crop in around 4-5 years, with maximum production in around 7-8 years.
