Cork Oak
A graceful shade tree with fascinating textured bark. This oak is unusual because it's evergreen, with beautiful spongy bark that's harvested for sealing that most precious of beverages, champagne! Cork oak is unique in its ability to regenerate its outer bark and is the world leader for cork production. A harvested tree stores up to five times more carbon than an unharvested one by utilising more carbon in bark regeneration. Cork forests account for 10 million tons of carbon dioxide absorption each year. A long-lived tree that performs best in dry and hot summer climates. Slow growth rate.
How to grow
Originally found in the coastal regions of the western Mediterranean, the Cork Oak is well suited to dry and hot summer climates. Prefers a well-drained soil and a sunny aspect.
