Easy to grow from seed, zinnias can be sown directly into well-prepared soil after all likelihood of frost has passed or you can give seedlings a head-start by sowing in punnets around 4-6 weeks before the last frost. Soak seed in water for several hours prior to planting to improve germination. Sow seed at a depth of around 1cm and maintain soil moisture during the germination period, which usually takes around 7-10 days. Once the seedlings emerge, thin to maintain a spacing of at least 15-30 cm between plants, depending on variety. Water regularly, especially while young and during dry periods. Avoid overhead watering which can lead to fungal infections. As zinnias grow, some varieties may benefit from staking or support, especially in windy areas. Deadhead spent blooms regularly to encourage continuous flowering.
