Blueberry 'Sunshine Blue'
This low chill compact southern highbush variety of blueberry produces a heavy crop of mid-sized summer fruit in almost any climate. Needing only 150 hours of winter chill, ‘Sunshine Blue’ will fruit reliably even in the subtropics. This compact semi-evergreen shrub is also the most tolerant of a higher pH, and is well suited to growing in pots. Self pollinating but will pollinate ‘Brigitta’ and ‘O’Neal’.
Low chill variety. Blueberries prefer an acidic soil with a pH of 4.5-5.5. Improve soils prior to planting with decomposed manure and compost. This is especially important in clay soils as blueberries prefer a free-draining soil high in organic matter. Check your pH and if you need to lower it further, apply elemental sulphur. Plant in a sunny position protected from wind. Mulch with pine needles. Apply a complete fertiliser in spring. While tolerant of part shade, full sun is required for optimal fruiting.
