Black Currant

Blackcurrants have long been used to make that famous cordial loved by children. The berries give the syrup its dark purple colour and, when mixed with plenty of sugar, has a very pleasant berry flavour. Extremely high in vitamin C. You can also use the fruit to make blackcurrant jams and jellies. An open woody shrub with large leaves suitable for the back of the border, berries are produced along the stem in summer.
How to grow

Currants are hardy and easy to grow and once established, produce an abundance of fruit on new wood. Enrich the soil with aged compost and manure prior to planting. Water regularly during establishment and during any extended dry periods. Plant in full sun and protect from frosts which may otherwise reduce yield. Prune to thin old wood and encourage fresh new fruiting growth.
