Asparagus 'Mary Washington' Crown

This traditional open-pollinated variety was introduced in the USA in 1919 and made its way to Australia in 1929, where it is still a garden favourite today. Mary Washington is a proven performer due to its vigour and good resistance to rust. Abundant slender green spears are produced during spring, or grow in the dark to produce those highly prized white spears.
How to grow

Long lived perennial vegetables, their extensive root system appreciates deeply dug soil enriched with plenty of manure and compost, add lime for a pH of 7+. Do not cut spears in the first year. Instead wait until years 2-3 to start your harvest. Always remove the spears with a sharp knife, cutting below the surface of the soil and cease harvesting when the spears become thinner than 1cm. Mulch asparagus generously to eliminate weed competition.
