Long lived perennial vegetables, their extensive root system appreciates deeply dug soil enriched with plenty of manure and compost, add lime for a pH of 7+. Do not cut spears in the first year. Instead wait until years 2-3 to start your harvest. Always remove the spears with a sharp knife, cutting below the surface of the soil and cease harvesting when the spears become thinner than 1cm. Mulch asparagus generously to eliminate weed competition.
