American Persimmon
Also known as The Sugar Plum, yes, like the story, due to the size and sweetness of the ripe fruit. American persimmon is a first-class timber tree with edible fruit that deserves to be more widely planted in Australian gardens. Male and female trees are required for fruiting, and frost improves fruit flavour. Astringent when green, becoming sweeter when mature, the fruit can be eaten straight from the tree. As well as breathtaking autumn foliage, transitioning from yellow and orange to reddish purple, the highly ornamental orange-coloured fruit persist well into winter, resembling Christmas decorations on the structural bare branches. A perfect specimen tree suitable for all gardens. Seed grown variety, grow more than one to increase chances of pollination.
