Grow Your Own Food

It’s not too late, gardening is a way forward and there has never been a better time to get your hands into the soil.
Grow Your Own Food

With frenzied buying in supermarkets and other bulk food retailers, Australia has seen dramatic and frightening shortages, the likes of which few of us expected. Panic set in, yet the humble act of gardening, and growing even a little food for the table allows many of us to feel just a little empowered, to know that we can provide ourselves with some food for the table from our own backyards.

It’s not too late, gardening is a way forward and there has never been a better time to get your hands into the soil. Before everything we desired came pre-packaged, we toiled in the garden. Modern living may have seen the backyard get smaller, or all but disappear in the case of apartment living, but if you have even one square meter of outdoor space, you can grow food for your table. Of course, the more room you have, the more you can grow, but even a few pots, a window planter and a half wine barrel is a great start.

Vegetables are available as seeds and seedlings, with seeds the best way to stockpile future supplies. Seeds are the source of life, and they are our insurance for the future. Seeds take up little space, last for several years in most cases and allow you to sow and grow, month after month, and year after year. Seeds put a portion of your food supply back in your hands, giving you some control in a world that has gone mad.

Even if you are a complete garden novice, you can grow from seed, and you can become a gardener, all it takes is a patch of soil, or a container of potting mix and you are on your way.

There are many seeds suitable for sowing now, and many that can offer you produce in as little as 14-40 days. Lettuce and radish are quick to germinate along with spinach, spring onions and kale. Peas will also grow quickly, offering you both produce for the table and freezer.

Herbs are also quick to grow from seed, especially chives, parsley and coriander.

Gardening is not instant, but it is insurance, peace of mind and powerful. The simple act of gardening does make a real difference, and you can too by joining in on one the most recession-proof activities available. You won’t believe how much you can achieve in just 14 days.
