Ginger and turmeric raises lots of questions down south

I need your advice on growing edible ginger in our home garden, preferably in a container. I would like to have full information including how to select the rhizome with the sprout and whether I can use the ginger bought from supermarkets.

Hi Member,

Native to the tropics and sub-tropics, ginger prefers a frost-free climate, although ginger can be grown in cooler areas in a protected part of the garden or in pots. Depending on your climate, ginger either prefers more shade (tropics) or more sun (cool and temperate areas), and is evergreen up north. Grow as an annual in cooler climates, planting in a frost-free environment in spring and harvesting in winter.
