The best companion plants for asparagus

Because asparagus is a long term crop, usually cropping for up to 20 years, consider oversowing and planting with suitable companion plants to not only support asparagus growth, but to maximise your yield and harvest.   

Coriander, dill and basil are all shallow rooted plants that won’t disrupt growth. These will also attract pollinators to the garden

And when crowns are dormant, use this space to grow shallow rooted, quick to harvest crops like spinach, lettuce, radish and beets, which take up very little space in the bed, and won’t compete for precious resources in the soil. 

Several flowers also make good companions such as marigolds or nasturtiums that act to support asparagus health by repelling whiteflies, aphids and nematodes.

Comfrey will not only attract pollinators but does enrich the soil, bringing nutrients from deep in the soil up to where your asparagus crowns are feeding. 

Strawberry plants are a great ground cover and weed suppressor provided the asparagus plants are planted deep enough to not cause root competition.
