Black Tupelo

A magnificent feature tree as a lawn specimen or landscape feature known for its spectacular autumn colour, the Nyssa also has a wonderfully elegant structure with a typical habit of many slender branches spreading horizontally from a straight trunk. It is an extremely long lived and adaptable tree, coping with waterlogged, poorly drained soil and dry positions. Inconspicuous greenish-white flowers in spring provide nectar for bees and the juicy dark blue fruit (edible but sour) that follows in late summer is popular with birds. Distinctive furrowed bark that develops with age is an added feature. Medium growth rate.
How to grow

Full sun, fertile soil, mulched to maintain cool root zone. Tolerates wet sites, drought and frost as well as hot climates. Resents being relocated and is best established while young to prevent damaging the tap root.
