In 1954, Britain's best known organic gardener, Lawrence DÿHills, established the 'Henry Doubleday Research Association' in the town of Bocking, north-east of London. Lawrence's mission was to conduct trials on the various comfrey strains present in the UK at the time, continuing the work of Henry Doubleday who had pioneered comfrey growing in the UK. Lawrence sourced many of Doubleday's original strains, grew them out and measured yields disease resistance and composition of the strains. As they were unnamed cultivars, Lawrence named the strains after his property with an assigned number.
