Wood Betony

Betonica officinalis syn. Stachy's officinalis commonly known as Purple Betony, Wood Betony, Hedgenettle or Bishop's Wort is a stunning perennial with bright pink to purple flower spikes which emerge from dark green, glossy foliage. Wood Betony is a tough and versatile plant that grows as a compact clump and works beautifully planted en mass or positioned in the front of a border. In the Middle Ages Wood Betony was believed to possess magical powers and was worn as a woven armband and planted in churchyards to ward off evil spirits and was even used as a cure for drunkenness. Betony is a lovely low spreading ground cover that, when in flower, provides nectar for bees, butterflies and beneficial insects.
How to grow

Easily grown in full sun to partial shade in average, medium to well drained soils. Remove spent flower stems.
