Giant Miscanthus
Grow your own biomass with this grass of monstrous proportions! During spring, new stems erupt from the ground, promptly forming very tall clumps of arching, green leaves. Fast growing, this Chinese grass becomes a useful living screen, decorated with pink plumes during autumn. Although large, the clumps are well-behaved and not invasive. Harvest the dormant winter stems for compost or to use as a mulch!
Full sun in moist free-draining soil, dislikes wet feet. Fast growth rate in fertile soil, slower growing in dry or sandy soils. Delay cutting back attractive autumnal spent flower plumes until winter. Cut to the base, use dried and dormant stems as mulch or add to compost.
