Spring at Heronswood

Spring has definitely arrived at Heronswood and this week is the perfect time, according to the lunar calendar, to sow Spring Greens.

I'm sowing lots of lettuces, mizunas, watercress, soft herbs like parsley, coriander and chervil and celery.

We are digging in the autumn sown green manures, so they have time to break down and enrich the soil before planting the beds up with summer vegies.

If you have a garden bed you are resting this season, consider planting a summer manure mix. It will provide flowers for the bees in just 4 weeks and will add nitrogen into the soil to help future plantings.

We finished planting out the new spring Parterre this week, it looks all fresh and new! Silverbeets, Florence and Bronze Fennel, Red and Green Spring Onions, Beetroot Chioggia, Burpees Golden, Bulls Blood, Red and Green Mizunas and little viola flowers. We are crossing the fingers the white cockatoo’s keep away!

Our Instagram followers would have seen my picture of Golden Snow Peas, we are enjoying their beautiful purple flower at the moment and the delicious peas will follow.

In the flower border the iconic Echium’s are beginning their spectacular flowering. Echium ‘Heronswood PinkHeronswood Blue and ‘Heronswood White’ all feature in our Spring magazine. Plant them at this time of year for a wonderful display next Spring. When you walk past all you can hear is the buzzzzing, the bees love these tall spires of flowers.

In the Kitchen garden I am still picking cabbages, cauliflowers, and the sprouting broccoli's have started to sprout. Snow peas and sugar snaps are starting to produce well and the first few asparagus spears are showing. The salad greens are loving a bit of warmth and growing faster than the kitchen can use, so I've been selling a few bunches in the shop.

This weeks menu favourite in our Fork to Fork restaurant .... Rhubarb mousse with orange almond Florentines and spiced rhubarb bites… Yum!
