Traditionally the busiest month of the year in the garden, the spring garden is in its prime. There’s still lots of work to be done to prepare your garden now for a long hot summer ahead.

#1 Compost care

Protect crops with shade cloth on hot days. 

#3 Water 

Water in the cool of the morning. This reduces the risk of foliar fungi, particularly on roses, pumpkin, zucchini, melon and cucumber. Read our article for more tips on watering.

Spray shrubs, vines, containerised plants, succulents and cycads with horticultural oil now. 

#5 Mulch 

Keep mulch from touching the base of trees and shrubs helps prevent attack by root-rotting diseases in wet weather) Dig plenty of compost into soil before planting. Mulch and water well after planting. Read our article on the different types of mulch.

Feed citrus and pawpaw using poultry manure or complete organic fertiliser.
