Veltheimia bracteata

Veltheimia bracteata

A signature plant at Heronswood where it has naturalised under the deep shade of the Moreton Bay Fig in our Tropical Garden. Rarely offered in garden centres, the glorious, tall pink flower spikes appear above glossy rosettes of fleshy green leaves in spring. A tough South African that is perfect for lighting up those difficult dry, shaded areas of the garden. Enjoying similar conditions, plant in any position where hellebores and clivias thrive.

How to grow

A deciduous bulb, with a short dormancy or almost evergreen in frost-free, moist climates. Plant in a shaded position. Ideal beneath canopy trees where they will naturalise, clothing the ground for much of the year. Allow flowers and leaves to die down naturally before tidying up plants. Protect from snails and slugs.
