Tomato 'Granny's Throwing'

Solanum lycopersicum L.

A favourite Italian heirloom tomato with a voluptuous shape, heavily ribbed fruit and excellent flavour. We've dubbed it 'Granny's Throwing' in honour of Australian Cartoon legend Michael Leunig who said it inspired him to create an iconic cartoon of "a granny winding up to launch this old fashioned throwing tomato, with cricket ball sized fruit, mushy flesh and powerful staining properties that would splatter magnificently at a passing politician". Whilst we don't encourage the hurling of fruit, we love the stories and history associated with Australian humor and heirloom fruits and vegetables, and this one is indeed, just like Granny used to throw. Harvest in 12-14 weeks; yields 300g fruit.

Tomato 'Granny's Throwing'

Also known as 'Periforme Abruzzo', this stunning heirloom tomato is highly versatile. A juicy, uniquely pear shaped, red tomato with wrinkled skin and a luscious flavour, while popular for pasta sauces and pastes, this tomato is equally adapted to salads and sandwiches and even roasting whole or stuffed. With ample flesh and minimal seed, this is an outstanding addition to the garden for anyone who loves to cook.
How to grow

Tomatoes are a warm season crop. Seed germinates best at 20-25°C. Sow seed 6-8 weeks before transplant. Sow in punnets or trays and maintain consistent moisture and temperature. Plant tomato seedlings out when soil temperature reaches 15°C or more, and after risk of frost has passed. Plant in full sun in an enriched soil. Mulch and water regularly. Stake at planting.
