Tokyo Bekana

Brassica rapa

A perpetual harvest crop that thrives in the winter garden. The delicate texture and mild mustard flavour show no sign of bitterness, even as they age. An excellent lettuce substitute.

Tokyo Bekana

A superb addition to any winter garden, with stunning bright green leaves that can be picked again and again. The delicate texture and mild mustard flavour shows no sign of bitterness, so you can eat it raw as well as in a stir-fry. Best eaten straight off the plant so you will never find this one in the shops.
How to grow

Greens in the cabbage family need rich soil with some lime for a pH of about 7.5 and adequate water so the growth is never checked. A good cover of mulch will insulate them from hot, dry spells of weather. Their most damaging pest are the caterpillars of the white cabbage butterfly. Dipel, pyrethrum and netting are all effective organic controls for these voracious pests.
