Paw Paw 'Red Army'

A self-pollinating, high-yielding red fleshed papaya capable of producing fruit in as little as 4 months when plants reach just 80cm in height. The sweet, melting flesh of the papaya is the epitome of exotic backyard fruit, but you don't have to live in the tropics to grow your own. Happily growing outside in cooler areas if planted in a protected spot, preferably against a north-facing wall. Will also grow well in a pot inside where it's tropical-looking leaves create a striking effect. Self-pollinating so no need for more than one plant for fruit.
How to grow

Papayas prefer a frost free climate with summer rainfall. Fast growing short-lived plants, replace every 3-4 years for maximum harvest. Papayas do need warm temperatures to set sweet fruit and although plants will grow successfully in gardens south of Sydney, fruit set is irregular and not all results are pleasing to the taste. Plant in a soil enriched with aged manure and decomposed compost. Water regularly, especially during hot dry weather and during fruiting. Plant in a protected position, preferably against a north facing wall. Harvest when the skin is about 50% green and yellow and gives under firm pressure.
