What to do in the garden

December

Home-grown strawberries are one of the tastiest grow your own fruits - juicy and warm from the plant, they are so sweet that they're irresistible - to people and birds! Net to protect from birds and harvest daily (sometimes twice a day!)

Berries are in full swing with loganberries and other bramble berries producing profusely. Enjoy the harvest and freeze any excess for the cooler months. Blueberries are coming to an end. Prune after the last harvest.

Spring flowering perennials are now crossing over with summer flowering perennials. Prune when they finish flowering to try to encourage repeat flowering in autumn.

Get fire-ready. Clear out your gutters, remove rubbish and debris from your garden and keep your lawn clean.  Test sprinklers and watering systems and check your fire plan.

Water and mulch to protect your garden from the hot summer to come and consider installing automatic irrigation for targeted watering. Replenish mulch as necessary.

Things to do in January

Summer pruning of fruit trees

Start to think about pruning fruit trees after you have harvested the fruit. Pruning at this time of year will restrict the growth of the tree, making it the ideal time to prune espaliered fruits.

Give fruit trees a good, deep water

If it's been a dry summer, give your fruit trees a good, deep water once a week. This is better than a daily, light water than will only reach roots close to the surface. It will also prevent fruit from splitting.

Fill up the bird baths

It is not just plants that need a drink over summer! Keep bird baths topped up to help the wildlife cool down. Birds will love having a splash around and it is delightful to watch.
