A handsome mid-sized deciduous oak, whose glossy leaves are ornately lobed and change to a buttery-yellow during autumn. Although known as the Turkey Oak, it is widespread throughout Asia Minor and southern Europe. Mature specimens develop a rounded crown, with lower lateral branches weeping with age. Being fast growing and tolerant of salt spray, it becomes a particularly useful windbreak for coastal areas.

Despite the name, the Swamp Oak grows well in drier Australian gardens. A generous and deep shade is the result of the thick and broad, fire-retardant foliage that are glossy on top but have a silvery-white sheen underneath. Autumn colour is usually yellow with flushes of reddish-purple.
